Covid-19 Death Process
Posted on: 03 April 2020
Dear brothers and sisters,
Assalamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatahu
We have been asked regarding our position on burying those who have passed away from Covid-19.
We are going through a very challenging period in our history, and are faced with having to make important and difficult decisions. Hounslow Jamia Masjid will not be handling any Covid-19 related deaths. Indeed this is a difficult decision and not one which we have made lightly, but have had to weigh all the points below.
As things stand, we do not have the required equipment or training to perform the ritual washing of the body. This PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is essential in minimising risk to our staff and volunteers for Covid-19 related deaths. Understandably, there are many worried and apprehensive volunteers who do not want to put themselves or their families at increased danger.
As has been stated over the last week or so in several statements across the UK, wherever a scenario arises where there is a reasonable expectation of harm to an individual or the wider community due to a lack of equipment or training, and with any trained staff unwilling to perform the washing due to genuine fear founded on a sound basis, the ritual washing and shrouding can be suspended.
As we will not be handling any Covid-19 deaths at our facility, we can advise of the following service in a neighbouring town who is handling such related instances.
The family of the deceased should inform Mr. Ayyaz Khan (Slough, UK) on 07860 859090 of a Covid-19 death.A sealed body bag will be shrouded in the coffin, and the funeral prayer should be performed at the designated burial ground before burial. To control the spread of any infection, the close family members will not be able to view the deceased. There will be limits on the number of people that can attend the burial. Any family members currently in isolation will not be allowed to attend the burial.Charges/payments, and guidance can be discussed with the contact above who will act as a link throughout.
Please note that there are no confirmed turnaround times for such deaths, burials are having to be spread out in accordance with guidelines provided. Please do remain patient.
May Allah forgive our deceased, grant comfort to their loved ones and overlook the shortcomings of the community at large in this difficult time.
Should anything change from the above, we will provide an update.
Zubair Awan, Joint General Secretary, Hounslow Jamia Masjid
