Press Release - Ofsted Comments on Hijab in schools
Posted on: 20 November 2017
Hounslow Jamia Masjid is disappointed at the comments attributed to the Ofsted Chief Inspector of Schools, who is quoted to have said: "inspectors will talk to girls who wear such garments [the hijab] to ascertain why they do so in the school".
Our Islamic primary school has achieved outstanding results year on year matching or exceeding non-religious schools , a clear indication that what one chooses to wear is not relevant.”
Shafiq Rehman, General Secretary mentioned, “We feel such comments require much thought before being made. Muslims are the most targeted group on many other subjects and this only adds fuel to the much shared view that they are a targeted population because of their religious beliefs”
The rise of Islamaphobia is unprecedented and such mis-placed comments are what the Muslim community could do without.
We congratulate all our women folk who choose to wear the hijab in schools and the work place in these difficult times.
